Scenic Paint Lead

The Scenic Painter Lead oversees the execution of all scenic paint work for assigned projects. This includes managing paint crews, interpreting renderings and samples, planning materials, and ensuring high-quality finishes are achieved on schedule. This role is hands-on and requires a deep knowledge of scenic techniques, color theory, and materials. This role requires a positive attitude, willingness to lead and mentor, and a strong work ethic. You'll be part of a creative, fast-paced team where craftsmanship and problem-solving are valued every day.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

Scenic Execution & Technique

  • Lead the application of scenic treatments including base coats, textures, aging, distressing, faux finishes, murals, and specialty coatings
  • Work from reference materials, samples, or designer notes to ensure visual accuracy
  • Approve and/or create test panels and samples before final application
  • Maintain consistency across multiple elements and surfaces
  • Travel to installation sites when required and contribute to final scenic touches during load-ins

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Print out scenic reference and/or color call outs from fabrication decks and review as needed
  • Continually update progress and tag necessary team members on chats  
  • Manage scenic painters and apprentices on the floor and in the field
  • Delegate tasks, provide guidance, and support skill development
  • Communicate clearly with Project Managers and Leads to align scenic work with build timelines
  • Foster a supportive and collaborative team environment

Planning & Materials

  • Make project-specific paint kits for on-site installations
  • Track paint and supply usage for reordering and budget tracking
  • Maintain an organized paint inventory and workspace
  • Ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal of materials

Quality Control & Safety

  • Uphold safety standards in all scenic work areas
  • Train team members on safe handling and application practices
  • Conduct final walkthroughs for quality assurance before installation or delivery
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both the shop and on-site.
  • Follow all company safety protocols and use proper PPE at all times.
  • Help with loading/unloading materials, organizing tools, and general shop upkeep.

Cross-Disciplinary Support:

  • Step in where needed to assist other teams or departments when asked by Foreman, Managers or Lead. This would be asked when necessary to ensure the job is completed on-time and/or to clients satisfaction.
  • Other duties may be assigned that include, but are not limited to: sanding, painting, moving props, loading trucks, etc.
  • Represent Tractor Vision’s quality standards and creative intent in every phase of the build

Installation & On-Site Work:

  • Participate in on-site installations, ensuring that all fabricated elements are installed properly and securely. 
  • Collaborate with team members to adapt to site conditions and solve unforeseen challenges quickly and effectively.
  • Travel when necessary.
  • Support other teams  as needed / as directed by Project Manager and Project Lead. Always keeping in mind the Make-It-Happen attitude.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of scenic painting experience in fabrication, theater, themed entertainment, theme parks, or related fields
  • Experience working with multiple substrates (wood, foam, metal, fabric)
  • Strong knowledge of scenic techniques, finishes, and tools
  • Strong knowledge of specialty coatings or flame-retardant materials
  • Ability to lead a team, manage timelines, and communicate effectively
  • Familiarity with working in a fast-paced shop environment
  • Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, or at scale when needed
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Required Skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Basic scenic carpentry or fabrication experience
  • Experience working in themed entertainment, theme parks, events, or art departments
  • Forklift or scissor lift certification 
  • Spanish-speaking a plus

Compensation

$30- $40 Hourly
