Tech / CNC Operator

Position Overview:

The Tech / CNC Operator is responsible for leading CNC routing operations within our Technical Department. This role is hands-on and detail-focused, supporting a wide variety of fabrication projects. In addition to running the CNC machine, this position will contribute to general technical workflows including digital file prep, material handling, machine maintenance, and collaborating on creative problem solving.

This position requires a solid understanding of CNC machinery, strong communication skills, and a willingness to support the full scope of the Tech Department when needed. You'll be part of a creative, fast-paced team where craftsmanship and problem-solving are valued every day.

Key Responsibilities:

CNC Operation & Workflow

  • Operate CNC router for wood, foam, sintra, acrylic, and other materials
  • Set up files, select tools, and generate cut paths using CAM software
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and ensure precision in cutting
  • Monitor and adjust machines during cutting processes to maintain quality
  • Label, organize, and transfer cut parts for Scenic and Fabrication teams

Technical Department Support

  • Assist with file prep for 3D printing, vinyl plotting, and other technical needs
  • Maintain clean and organized CNC and Tech work areas
  • Help develop custom jigs or fixtures when needed for special projects
  • Track materials, time, and tool use for project reporting

Maintenance & Communication

  • Perform basic machine maintenance and calibration
  • Communicate with Tech Lead and Project Managers about file corrections or adjustments
  • Assist with training apprentices or junior tech staff on machine operation and safety protocols
  • Report machine or file issues and proactively help solve production challenges

Shop Maintenance & Safety:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both the shop and on-site.
  • Follow all company safety protocols and use proper PPE at all times.
  • Help with loading/unloading materials, organizing tools, and general shop upkeep.

Cross-Disciplinary Support:

  • Step in where needed to assist other teams or departments when asked by Foreman, Managers or Lead. This would be asked when necessary to ensure the job is completed on-time and/or to clients satisfaction.
  • Other duties may be assigned that include, but are not limited to: sanding, painting, moving props, loading trucks, etc.
  • Represent Tractor Vision’s quality standards and creative intent in every phase of the build

Installation & On-Site Work:

  • Participate in on-site installations, ensuring that all fabricated elements are installed properly and securely. 
  • Collaborate with team members to adapt to site conditions and solve unforeseen challenges quickly and effectively.
  • Travel when necessary.
  • Support other teams  as needed / as directed by Project Manager and Project Lead. Always keeping in mind the Make-It-Happen attitude.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience with CNC router operations in a fabrication or scenic environment
  • Proficient with CAM software such as VCarve, Fusion 360, or RhinoCAM
  • Understanding of feeds/speeds, material types, and tool paths
  • Comfortable interpreting digital and printed drawings
  • Detail-oriented and organized, able to handle multiple projects on tight timelines
  • Comfortable lifting sheets and operating around large machinery
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with other digital fabrication tools (3D printing, vinyl plotting)
  • Scenic or experiential fabrication experience
  • Spanish-speaking a plus
